Even though Germany thrashed Scotland in the first game of Euro 2024, they could have a weak link in the form of Julian Nagelsmann, according to Dominic King in It’s All Kicking Off.
The hosts were ruthless as they began their Group A campaign against Steve Clarke’s men, with goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala in the opening 20 minutes.
Already a mammoth task, Scotland’s hopes of salvaging something from the game were dashed after Ryan Porteous was sent off for a horror challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.
Kai Havertz scored the next penalty to consolidate a commanding lead on the stroke of half-time.
Second-half goals from substitutes Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can showed Germany’s strength in depth, while an own goal from Antonio Rudiger gave the hapless Scottish fans something to shout about.
Speaking after the match, King insisted that Gareth Southgate is a superior coach to the former Bayern Munich manager, citing Germany’s patchy defensive record in the run-up to the final.
King went on to suggest that Germany “will be a failure” later in the tournament despite Nagelsmann’s offensive talent.

Julian Nagelsmann failed to inspire confidence despite Germany’s rout of Scotland
The hosts’ attacking talent was in full force from the start, with Florian Wirtz putting them in front.
Jamal Musiala played a decisive role as Germany’s dominance turned the clash into a rout.
But a spotty defensive record heading into the tournament suggests potential weaknesses on defense.
